Director of Music and Organist

Position type: part-time

We are seeking a new part-time Director of Music and Organist. The Director of Music and Organist provides musical leadership for worship and the broader music ministry of Erwin Presbyterian Church. This position integrates responsibilities traditionally held by a Director of Music and an organist, offering artistic leadership, ministerial sensitivity, and collaborative engagement in worship. The Director of Music and Organist supports the congregation’s worship life through traditional sacred music while also helping the church discover and embrace new and contemporary expressions appropriate to Presbyterian worship.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Worship Leadership
   • Provide musical leadership for Sunday worship and special services, including hymns, service music, and choral accompaniments.
   • Collaborate with the pastor in planning worship that reflects PC(USA) theology, the liturgical calendar, and the life of the congregation.
   • Select and prepare music that supports congregational singing and enriches worship.
2. Choir and Music Ministry
   • Recruit, direct, and nurture choirs and other musical ensembles.
   • Lead rehearsals and support the musical and spiritual growth of volunteer musicians.
   • Introduce new music thoughtfully, balancing tradition with appropriate contemporary and emerging sacred music.
3. Organ, Piano, and Instruments
   • Serve as principal organist and/or pianist for worship.
   • Prepare registrations and accompaniments appropriate to worship and acoustical settings.
   • Oversee the care and maintenance of the organ and other musical instruments.
4. Ministerial and Administrative Responsibilities
   • Provide ministerial care within the music ministry.
   • Consult with families regarding music for weddings, funerals, and memorial services.
   • Maintain the music library and coordinate guest musicians and substitutes as needed.
   • Engage in ongoing professional development related to church music and worship.

Qualifications:

• Proficiency in organ and/or piano (organ preferred; pianists willing to learn organ encouraged).
• Experience directing choirs and working with volunteer musicians.
• Appreciation for Reformed worship theology and congregational song.
• Collaborative spirit, organizational skills, and pastoral sensitivity.

Time Commitment & Compensation:

• Time: Approximately 10-15 hours per week, including Sunday worship and rehearsals.
• Compensation: $10,000-$15,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
