MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Oct. 24, 2012) — The Milligan College Orchestra will present a concert, titled “Celebrating Strings,” on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert, directed by Dr. Kellie Brown, will celebrate string players and teachers from the Appalachian area.
“The purpose of this concert is to not only celebrate great music and wonderful musicians, but to look to the future generation that will be sitting in our orchestras and bringing music to audiences all over the globe,” said Brown, chair and associate professor of music at Milligan. “It is also a chance to recognize the teachers who dedicate their lives and talents to cultivating that next generation of musicians.”
The orchestra will perform the beautiful film music of Ennio Morricone including “Gabriel’s Oboe” and “Cinema Paradiso,” and other exciting works including Handel’s “Concerto Grosso,” “Op. 3, Meditation” by Jack Jarrett, and “Pizzicati” from “Sylvia” by Léo Delibes.
The second half of the concert will showcase the virtuosic playing of the violin students of Benjamin Dawson, Jane MacMorran and Catherine McGlasson from Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia (STEA), as well as students from The Academy of Strings, directed by Timothy and Kimberly Barrett.
STEA is a non-profit organization that provides music education and Suzuki instruction in violin, viola and piano to students ages 3 to adult.
The Academy of Strings, hosted by Central Baptist Church in Johnson City, offers violin instruction to students ages 4 to 18.
The Milligan Orchestra will accompany the large group of violinists in a variety of music including works by Dvorak, Seitz, Bach, and Fiocco. It will conclude with a fabulously clever arrangement of Leroy Anderson’s “Buglar’s Holiday.”
