Homecoming event to celebrate Milligan authors

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Oct. 16, 2012) — Milligan College will host “Celebrating Milligan Authors,” a book fair highlighting the work of authors associated with the college, on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 2:30 p.m. on the first floor of the P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library.

The event is part of the college’s Homecoming festivities, Oct. 26-27.

Eight authors will read from their recent works, and 14 others will display and sell copies of their books. Select authors will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Million Pennies Campaign, an ongoing effort to raise funds for improvements to the Milligan library.

The authors scheduled to read include:

  • Samantha Baugus, a Milligan sophomore, reading from “The Line Between”
  • LeAnn Blackmore, a 1988 alumna, reading from “Obscure No More: Life-Shaping Lessons from the Often Overlooked”
  • Kevin Brown, a 1992 alumnus, reading selections from his books of poetry
  • Del Harris, a 1959 alumnus, reading from “On Point: Four Steps to Better Life Teams”
  • Clint Holloway, a 1995 alumnus, reading from “Quentin U. Quackenbush Celebrates Q & U”
  • Lee Magness, a 1969 alumnus and professor of Bible at Milligan, reading from “Faith in Writing: Essays in Honor of Jack L. Knowles”
  • Pat Magness, a 1969 alumna and retired professor of humanities at Milligan, reading from “Faith in Writing: Essays in Honor of Jack L. Knowles”
  • Pat Oaks, a 1962 alumna, reading from “The Old Green Rocker”

Other authors whose books will be for sale include Paul Blowers, Karen Brewster, Marty Bullis, Joel Carillet, Janet Faulk, Billye Joyce Fine, Eddie Fine, Christy Isbell, Dick Major, Hope Irvin Marston, Bruce Shields, Ted Thomas, R. Mark Webb and Josh Ulm.

This is the first year the college has hosted a book fair during Homecoming weekend. The event was suggested by Holloway, one of the participating readers.

“I contacted alumni, faculty, staff and student authors and got a great response,” said Jefferson Harbin, user services librarian. “There was a great interest in creating this event to celebrate the breadth of Milligan’s creativity and scholarship, while also affording the authors the opportunity to sell their works.”
