Young named vice president for academic affairs and dean at Milligan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (August 21, 2012) — Milligan College concluded a national search for its new vice president for academic affairs and dean with the appointment of Dr. R. Garland Young.

Young has served in this role in an interim capacity since January 2012. He came to Milligan in 2010 as the associate vice president for graduate and professional studies (GPS), where he provided administrative coordination and recruiting oversight to Milligan’s non-traditional programs.

“Dr. Young has done an excellent job in his interim capacity and has demonstrated a deep appreciation for Milligan’s mission and a love for our faculty and students,” said Milligan President Bill Greer. “I look forward to his continued contribution as we seek to uphold and extend our mission.”

The search committee, under the leadership of Dr. Melinda Collins and composed of faculty and staff as well as a student representative, worked for several months to fine-tune the job description and identify desirable qualifications.

“Their search yielded a number of excellent candidates, three of whom were brought to the campus for interviews,” Greer said. “Ultimately, it was clear that we had an excellent candidate already in place.”

Before coming to Milligan, Young served as the associate dean and director of adult education at Mt. Aloysius College in Pennsylvania. He previously held a position as director of adult and extended programs at University of the Cumberlands and has a 26-year career in Christian higher education. He has facilitated online learning and helped lead the institutions he has served in the launch of a variety of graduate programs, including business administration, education and counseling. He also has worked with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools on accreditation proposals and has an excellent understanding of academic and administrative work.

Prior to his administrative roles, Young served 17 years as a full-time faculty member in religion and philosophy. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in religion-Greek from Union University (Jackson, Tenn.), and a Master of Divinity and a Ph.D. in New Testament studies from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, Ky.).
