MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 17, 2012) — The Milligan Women’s Chorale, under the direction of Anne Brooks Elliott, will present its 2012 spring concert in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel on Sunday, April 22, at 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
The chorale is a women’s ensemble that sings various styles of music, performing on and off campus. Continuing in Milligan’s strong tradition of women’s vocal ensembles, the chorale was founded in the fall of 2008. The chorale performs literature of different styles ranging from sacred to popular.
The ladies’ ensemble will perform a variety of works including Aaron Copland’s adaptation of “At the River,” arranged by R. Wilding White; “Jerusalem Luminosa” by Abbie Betinis; “The Poet Sings” by Z. Randall Stroope; and “A Little Jazz Mass” by English composer and arranger Bob Chilcott.
“The chorale has enjoyed a record number of performances for various programs, churches and concerts this past year,” said Elliott. “We are pleased to present our final concert featuring music in a wide range of styles that highlight the unique sound of treble voices.”
The program also will include selections from sacred, gospel, art song and ethnic music. The concert accompanist is Amanda Eversole along with guest instrumentalists Tommy Parker and Lucas Schmidt.
Elliott, assistant professor of the practice of music, is in her 11th year at Milligan. She is from Myrtle Beach, S.C., and joined the Milligan music faculty as piano instructor in fall 1999.
In addition to directing the Women’s Chorale, Elliott currently teaches applied piano, applied accompanying and piano as secondary. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in piano performance from the University of South Carolina Coastal Carolina and a master in church music in piano/accompanying from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. She also earned a certificate in piano pedagogy at East Tennessee State University and has studied piano pedagogy with Dr. Maurice Hinson of Louisville, Ky.
Her choral directing also includes the Highest Praise vocal ensemble of Central Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tenn., which performs annually at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., as well as at area churches and organizations. She performs recitals and programs in collaboration with other musicians in the area and at Milligan. She also plays orchestra keyboard in musical theatre productions at Milligan.
Elliott serves as adjudicator in local piano festivals and competitions and is a member in the local chapter of Music Teachers National Association. She has been guest lecturer and presenter on the subject of “Human Temperament and Practice” at local and state conferences.
