MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 10, 2012) — Milligan College’s Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program successfully completed its reaccreditation with the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), extending the program’s accreditation for the next 10 years.
The 10-year reaccreditation period earned by Milligan’s OT program is the maximum period offered by ACOTE, the accrediting body of the American Occupational Therapy Association Inc.
“ACOTE offers a five, seven or 10-year reaccreditation period depending on the strength and quality of the program, non-compliance issues and other criteria,” said Dr. Jeff Snodgrass, chair of Milligan’s occupational therapy program. “I am thrilled that we received the maximum 10-year reaccreditation period with zero non-compliance issues to address. ACOTE’s decision is a testament to the hard work, diligence and dedication of the OT faculty and staff at Milligan.”
The decision made by ACOTE at its December 2011 accreditation meeting represents a culmination of an extensive one-and-a-half year self-study process involving Milligan’s faculty, staff, students and community partners. It affirms the OT program’s substantial growth in both size and quality since its inception in 1998.
Milligan’s OT graduates enjoy a 100 percent job placement rate in a variety of traditional and non-traditional health care settings locally and throughout the country.
“The demand for occupational therapists has never been stronger, and all leading indicators, including data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, project the profession to grow much faster than average for the next 10 years and beyond,” Snodgrass said. “The occupational therapy program at Milligan is well poised to continue to meet this demand with our unique approach to preparing occupational therapists as servant leaders who engage in scholarship, contribute to the profession and offer clinical expertise to underserved communities.”
Milligan’s OT program is a full-time, two-and-a-half year program, including fieldwork. The 79-hour curriculum includes coursework in three essential components: basic skills, the occupational therapy process and a capstone experience.
