Awards ceremony honors Milligan students


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 28, 2010) — Milligan College’s Awards Convocation on Thursday, April 22, was a special day for many Milligan students who were honored for their accomplishments this past year. More than 60 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony.

Will Clark, a senior from Limestone, Tenn., received the year’s most distinguished award, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award. Clark also received business administration and accounting awards and was honored as a member of the Alpha Chi, Sigma Tau Delta and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies. He also was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award recipient is nominated by the faculty. The award is presented each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic record, and participation in college life.

Clark will graduate May 8 with degrees in humanities and accounting. He is the son of James and Annette Clark.

Local students receiving awards include: 

The Performing and Visual Arts Outstanding Student Scholarship is awarded each year to a rising junior or senior fine arts major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who also has found significant ways to connect to the many facets of Milligan’s fine arts program. This year’s recipient was Lacie Black of Jonesborough. Abigail Banks of Elizabethton, along with Alison Emmert and Melanie Yodkins, both of Johnson City, were honored for their contributions to the theatre area. The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Music, which is presented to the person deemed to have the most consistently exhibited excellence in music courses, ensembles and personal performance, was presented to Shauna Slemp of Fall Branch.

The Johnson City Press Tom Hodge Journalism Scholarship was presented to Seth Woods of Roan Mountain. Shannon Slaughter of Gray received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Communication.

Haley Trivett of Johnson City was presented with the French Award on the basis of outstanding achievement, exemplary commitment and measurable progress in the acquisition of French language skills. Tim Laurio of Jonesborough received the Humanities Award. 
Senior Katy Fox of Johnson City received The Standard Publishing Award for Outstanding Promise in Christian Education.

Jessi Webster of Johnson City and Jessi Pansock of Piney Flats were honored with theColonel Lee B. Ledford Award for Student Research.

The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Business was presented to Ellyn Sapp of Johnson City.

Toby Hoyle of Jonesborough and Brian Newbold of Johnson City were recognized for their work with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), which provides free tax preparation for low income families.

Amanda Morrell of Bluff City was one of two students to receive the STEM Scholarship Award, which is funded by the National Science Foundation for fields of study in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Kelley Foster of Johnson City was recognized with the Outstanding Biology Award, and Brandon Barnett of Elizabethton received theOutstanding Mathematics Student AwardThe Lone L. Sisk Scientific Learning Award was presented to Kristen Jeffreys of Johnson City.

Jill Blevins of Butler and Ted White of Bristol, Tenn., were named to the Milligan College Nursing Honor Society.

Undergraduate Student Teaching Awards were presented to Rhonda Shaver of Kingsport for PreK-3 and Jessica Davis of Roan Mountain for K-6. Julie Buchanan of Johnson City and Andrew Bentley of Elizabethton were presented with Master of Education Intern Awards.Tiffany Erwin of Unicoi received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for EducationThe Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Emily Arnold of Elizabethton. Jennifer Pangle of Kingsport received the Paul Clark Teacher Education Award, named in honor of Milligan’s education area’s founding professor.

Dr. Bill Greer, vice president for institutional advancement, was recognized with the Student Appreciation Award for his work with the Student Government Association as an adviser and mentor.

Other award recipients include: 

Danielle Thomas, a sociology and humanities major from Frankfort, Ky., received the Dennis Bratton Leadership Award. This award recognizes a student for service in the community and on campus, excellence in Christian character, evidence of Christian service in a local church, and advocacy for change to improve society. The award was established by Hugh Jones and is named in honor of Dennis Bratton, senior minister at Christ’s Church in Jacksonville, Fla., and a member of the Milligan College Board of Trustees.

Ty Lee of Springdale Ariz., received The Outstanding Senior Fine Arts Award. Along with excellence in the classroom, this award acknowledges students who have best exemplified what it means to be an artist. Seniors Haylie Black of Plainfield, Tenn., and Will McVey of Portales, N.M., were recognized for their contributions to the Milligan College Theatre Department.

The Women’s Chorale Award was presented to Meghan Daley of Virginia Beach, Va. Joel Perry of Salem, Ore., received the Orchestra Award, and Lydia Parker of Manteno, Ill., was recognized with the Concert Choir Award.

Lauren MacGrath of Nashua, N.H., received the Tri-Cities Society of Professional Journalists Scholarship.

Tim Hurtak of Lexington, Ky., was presented with the German Award, while The Spanish Award went to Haylie Black. Chelsea Farnam of San Antonio, Texas, received the English Award. Megan Rapp of Mason, Ohio, was honored with The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Humane Learning. 

The Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Award was presented to J.D. Larson of Ashland, Wis. Alexander Henderson of Ooltewah, Tenn., received The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Biblical LearningThe Earl R. Stuckenbruck Award for Excellence in Greek was presented to Aaron Jones of Columbus, Ind.

Michael Johnston of McDonough, Ga., was named the Sociology Major of the Year, and Allison Hill of Franklin, N.C., received the Service-Learning Student Award. Rachel Lee of Morristown, Tenn., was named the Student Psychology Major of the Year. Garrett March of Abingdon, Md., and Katie Lindner of Bel Air, Md., were awarded the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Social Learning.

Tracy Taylor of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, received the Legal Studies AwardThe Computer Information Systems Award was presented to Nathan Bordelon of Kissimmee, Fla. Nicole Sliwoski of Cosby, Tenn., received the Wall Street Journal Award.

Kathleen Daly of Indianapolis, Ind.; Alisa Rickard of Peru, Ind.; Tim Sisto of Landing, N.J.; and Jessica Russell of New Market, Tenn., were recognized for their work with VITA(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).

Bryan McDowell of Evansville, Ind., was presented with the Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Student Award, and Amanda Van Rheeden of Mt. Zion, Ill., was honored with the Outstanding Senior Chemistry Student AwardThe Outstanding Student Scholarship for Scientific Learning was awarded to Curtis Gibson of Lewis Center, Ohio. Gibson also received the STEM Scholarship Award.

Rachel Landry of Boone, N.C., received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for NursingThe Outstanding Senior Nursing Award went to Jill Bourgeois of Churchville, Va., who was also recognized by Milligan’s Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors as theOutstanding Academic Student.

Along Bourgeois, Katherine Baird of Morristown, Tenn.; Megan Daley of Virginia Beach, Va.; Lianna Etcheson of Crawfordsville, Ind.; Chelsea Smith of Greenwood, Ind.; and Kelly Wiltcher of Sevierville, Tenn., were named to the Milligan College Nursing Honor Society.
Abby Carter of Anchorage, Alaska, received the Human Performance and Exercise Science Award.

Troy Petrie of Louisville, Ky., was honored with an Undergraduate Student Teaching Award for his work in secondary education. Petrie also received The Student Leadership Award for demonstrating servant leadership, virtuous character, active leadership responsibility and potential, and serving as a role model to other students.

Aaron Woods of Aurora, Colo., was recognized by Milligan’s Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors as the Outstanding Male Athlete, and Meredith Lynch of Lexington, Ky., was recognized as the Outstanding Female Athlete.

Brittany Kahlert of Forest Hill, Md., was recognized with the SGA Distinguished Service Award.
