Milligan celebrates Earth Week

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 16, 2010) — To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Milligan College will host a series of special events, April 18-24. The events, which are free and open to the public, are sponsored by Milligan’s Creation Care Committee and Residence Life.

“Earth Week is one way for the campus to recognize that caring for God’s creation is every Christian’s responsibility,” said student Marsha Allen, leader of the Creation Care Committee.

The week begins with a Creation Care vespers service on Sunday, April 18, at 9 p.m. in the lower level of Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel. The theme of the service is “Common Ground: The Christian Call to Love Creation.” It will be led by Dr. Heather Hoover, assistant professor of English and director of writing at Milligan.

On Wednesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., Milligan will present “Hope for Creation: A Live Global Simulcast,” hosted by Blessed Earth. The simulcast event in Milligan’s Hyder Auditorium includes special guests and music, an exclusive look at a new creation care video series, and an interactive discussion with leaders and groups across the country.

The Appalachian Literature class is sponsoring a literature and scripture reading on Milligan’s Little Hartland lawn on Thursday, April 22, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Students and visitors are requested to bring their favorite environmental literature, scripture or poetry to read aloud.

To emphasize the importance of conserving energy, Milligan will hold a “Lights Out” earth hour on Thursday, April 22, from 8 to 9 p.m. During this time, the entire campus is encouraged to turn off all lights and electronic devices.

The week concludes on Saturday, April 24, with a clean-up of Buffalo Creek. Volunteers will meet at the Milligan gazebo at the campus entrance at noon.
