MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 27, 2010) – The Milligan College theater and music departments bring the musical version of the beloved classic “Little Women” to the stage Feb. 18-21, in Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. The Feb. 18-20 performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Feb. 21 matinee begins at 2:30 p.m.
General admission is $8, and student tickets are $5. All performances are open to the public. Tickets are available in advance beginning Feb. 1 in the Milligan College Bookstore or at the box office prior to each performance. Seating is limited.
The timeless story of Jo March and her sisters as they become adults during the American Civil War is set to music in this 2005 Broadway musical adapted for the stage by Allan Knee. Music and lyrics are by Jason Howland and Mindi Dickstein. The musical couples memorable melodies with the American tale of the successful underdog.
“Jo, an aspiring writer, struggles to keep the ebb and flow of the March family from splintering out of control during one of the most challenging times in American history,” said Dr. Dennis R. Elkins, artistic director of theater at Milligan. “This story is a great examination of not only how the Civil War affected common society, but also the rising influence of women is areas completely dominated by men, such as the world of publishing.”
Milligan student, Kylie Gaulding, heads the cast as Jo, along with Kristie Strand, Melanie Richards and Haylie Black playing her sisters, Meg, Beth and Amy. Local favorite and accomplished performer, Michael Martin, makes her Milligan debut as their most warm and wise “Marmee” March. Alex Henderson, Tim Laurio, Will McVey and Matt Raines complement the story as the gentlemen who enter their lives. Bri Curtis, Elizabeth Naberhaus, Lydia Parker and Rosemarie Shields provide the rest of this stellar cast.
Dr. Kellie Brown, associate professor of music at Milligan, is the musical director. Dr. Charlotte Anderson, assistant professor of the practice of music at Milligan, is the vocal director.
“Musical theater is one of my favorite projects at Milligan,” Brown said. “It is an exciting and rewarding collaborative experience for students and faculty in the arts.”
