Milligan College, Tenn. (Oct. 7, 2010) — Dr. Kevin Brown will read from “Exit Lines,” his first full-length collection of poetry, on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Milligan College’s McMahan Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Brown, a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., is associate professor of English in the Department of English and Modern Foreign Languages at Lee University (Cleveland, Tenn.). “Exit Lines” was published in 2009 by Plain View Press.
After graduating from Happy Valley High School in 1988, Brown received a B.A. in English from Milligan College, a master’s degree in English from East Tennessee State University, a Ph.D. in English from the University of Mississippi and a second master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Alabama.
He has published critical articles on Ralph Ellison, Kurt Vonnegut and John Barth, as well as more popular essays on writing, religion and movies. He has also published essays on teaching and education in such journals as Academe, The Chronicle of Higher Education, College Quarterly and Teaching American Literature.
Additionally, Brown has recently had several articles accepted for publication that explore how contemporary authors portray biblical figures in their attempts to re-tell the gospel story. His article on John the Baptist appeared in The Midwest Quarterly, while one on Mary Magdalene was published by PLL: Papers on Language and Literature. His book on this subject, “They Love to Tell the Story: Five Contemporary Novelists Take on the Gospels,” will soon be published by Kennesaw State University Press.
