MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Dec. 17, 2010) — The Milligan College music department donated $3,678, the proceeds of its Dec. 5 community Christmas concert, to The Salvation Army.
Dr. Kellie Brown, chair of Milligan’s music department, presented the check this week to Maj. Gary Elliott, corps officer with The Salvation Army’s Johnson City Corps.
This year the Milligan Christmas concert had a record attendance, with more than 1,100 people in the audience in Seeger Memorial Chapel. The annual concert is free, but the college collects a suggested $5 donation to benefit a different organization each year.
“I am so pleased with the generosity of our audience for such a worthy cause as The Salvation Army,” Brown said. “I know, especially at this time of the year, that they are a great help and blessing to those in need.”
The Salvation Army’s Johnson City Corps serves Washington, Carter, Unicoi and Greene counties. One of its avenues of outreach, the Charles O. Gordon Center of Hope, located at 200 Ashe Street in Johnson City, provides emergency and transitional shelter, financial assistance through social services, and meals through bagged food for families and a feeding program.
“This time of year, we are especially busy at the Center of Hope,” Elliott said. “It’s an 80-bed lodge, but during inclement weather we open our doors and let everyone in. We set up cots in the hallways.”
The Salvation Army’s kettle collection efforts and other donations are vital to providing these and other services to those who need assistance.
