MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 15, 2008) – Alumni and friends of Milligan College will return to campus for the college’s annual Homecoming festivities, Oct. 23-25. The weekend includes a variety of activities, ranging from a parade to special theatrical performances.
A highlight each year is the annual Associated Ladies for Milligan (ALM) Scholarship 5K Run/2.5K Walk on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 9 a.m. This event is sponsored by WorkSpace Interiors, Saratoga Technologies and Franklin Health & Fitness Center. Participants will convene at Derthick Hall. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female in each age group. The registration fee is $15 and the proceeds benefit student scholarships at Milligan.
New to Homecoming this year is a story booth, where alumni will have the opportunity to share and record their favorite three-minute story for the next generation of Buffaloes. Modeled after NPR’s StoryCorps, the story booth will preserve the memories of Milligan alumni.
Other highlights of the weekend are the theatrical performances of “The Rock and The Rabbi”on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m. and “The Witnesses” on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m. Both performances will be in Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. Tickets for general seating are $25, with $10 benefiting student scholarships at Milligan.
The festivities commence on Friday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m., with a Vintage Buffs reception especially for alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago. The reception will include time to visit with Milligan friends, to hear from President Donald Jeanes and to celebrate the exciting developments in the life of the college.
At 6 p.m. the class of 2004 is invited to dinner at River’s Edge Restaurant in Erwin on the banks of the Nolichucky River.
Several alumni and friends will be honored Friday evening at the annual “Celebrate Milligan!” dinner. Gary Richardson (’78) will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award. The Hardin “Spirit of Milligan” award will be given to Frank Jarrett. Gina Adams Reynolds (’96) and Loren Stuckenbruck (’81) will be honored with the Professional Excellence Award. Doneva Bays (’97) and Philip Rotich (’03) will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. Also being recognized for the Heritage Award this year are the Sahli, Dove and Roberts families. The awards dinner will be held in the McCormick Dining Center at 6:30 p.m. General seating is $20. Tickets must be purchased by Friday, October 16.
Saturday’s schedule is busy with receptions for the classes of 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2004, various athletic events and the annual Homecoming parade.
The annual alumni vs. student flag football game will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Milligan’s Anglin Soccer Field. The winners will march in the parade with their trophy.
At 11 a.m. volleyball alumnae are invited to take on this year’s volleyball team in Milligan’s Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
The Milligan Aqua Buffs take on King College at 1 p.m. in the Lacy Fieldhouse, while the soccer teams take on Tennessee Wesleyan – the women at 4 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m. – on the soccer field.
There will also be a women’s basketball reunion in the Lacy Fieldhouse at 4:30 p.m.
Firehouse Catering will serve lunch from noon to 12:45 p.m. There will be live music and a brief program, with a visit from former Milligan President Marshall Leggett. Tickets are $12 for ages 10 and older and $6 for children under 10. They must be purchased in advance.
One of the main attractions on Saturday is the 10th annual Homecoming Parade at 2 p.m. The parade route will follow Blowers Boulevard, the main road through campus. A “Fall Festival,” complete with inflatable attractions and live music performed by the Pleasant Hill Band, will be held after the parade from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Derthick Lawn.
All meal and feature events are ticketed events. All other events are free.
