MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (November 24, 2009) – Two jazz combos will perform at Milligan College on Friday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. in SUB7, located in the McMahan Student Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
Jazz combos are small ensembles that perform a compilation of jazz arrangements emphasizing improvisation and small-group performance. The combos feature the musical talent of 14 Milligan students and are under the direction of Rick Simerly, associate professor of music at Milligan. The evening’s selections include a variety of styles from swing to rock.
“Since the jazz combo program began a few years ago, it has been a great experience,” said Tim Wasem, a Milligan senior performing in one of the combos. “Mr. Simerly puts a lot of time into picking songs and directing the group in practices. But the beauty of the combo program is that when the concert comes, we’re on our own. The students get to take charge and count off the tunes, and we take turns improvising on each song.”
