MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 8, 2009) — Milligan College will present the Henry and Emerald Webb Lecture Series, “A Life’s Worth of Humanities,” on Tuesday, April 14, and Thursday, April 16, at 11 a.m. in Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel. Dr. LeRoy Lawson, who serves as an international consultant for Christian Missionary Fellowship International (CMFI), will be this year’s keynote speaker.
Lawson initially worked with CMFI, a leading mission organization associated with Christian churches/churches of Christ, in the mid-1960s. He returned to the agency in 2004 following a 13-year stint as president of Hope International University in Fullerton, Calif. During his first nine years at HIU, Lawson also served as senior minister of Central Christian Church in Mesa, Ariz., a position he held from 1979 to 1999. Under his leadership, the congregation grew from an average attendance of 490 to approximately 4,500.
Lawson is no stranger to Milligan College, having served in a variety of positions at the college from 1965 to 1973, including assistant professor of English and department chair, director of the humanities program, administrative assistant to the president, and vice president. He has served as a member of the Milligan College Board of Trustees since 2005.
Lawson holds a bachelor of theology degree from Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Ore.; a bachelor of arts degree from Cascade College and a master of arts degree in teaching from Reed College, both in Portland, Ore.; and a doctor of philosophy degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He has published 29 books and written numerous articles for “Christian Standard,” “The Lookout,” and other publications. Additionally, he has served in a variety of leadership roles, including president of the North American Christian Convention and as a board member for Provision Ministries.
Lawson’s lectures will address “Present at the Creation” on Tuesday, April 14, and “Present Near the Conclusion” on Thursday, April 16. Both lectures are free and open to the public.
The Webb Lecture Series were inaugurated in 2003 and named in honor of Dr. Henry Webb and his late wife, Em. Dr. Webb is professor emeritus of church history at Milligan College and one of the leading Restoration Movement church historians.
