MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 27, 2009) – The artistic works of Milligan College art major Kalee Nagel will be on display in the Milligan College Art Gallery from March 29 to April 3. An opening reception will be held Sunday, March 29, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Nagel’s show, “CMYK Visions,” will consist of 11 paintings, five drawings and three sculptures.
Nagel explained that “CMYK” is a common four-color printing process consisting of cyan, magenta, yellow and key (black). A layer of each color prints until it creates the full color image on the page. “Visions” implies something more abstract but still made up of layers of meaning.
“My paintings use only white and black as neutral colors, like the key and paper in a magazine image,” said Nagel. “Many of my pieces are portraits, but they are abstracted, taken down to the most essential parts.”
The most dominant works in the show are eight painted portraits Nagel created from photos she distorted by raising the contrast and then taking artistic liberty on shapes, colors and textures. She said the drawings and sculptures do not follow the theme as much, but they maintain the underlying theme of telling a story with the most basic and abstracted elements of that story.
“All art is about giving freeze frames of the stories that fill the world around us,” Nagel said. “I love trying to capture life without reproducing it exactly.”
Nagel, a native of Rogersville, Tenn., is a double major in fine arts, with an emphasis in studio art, and communications, with an emphasis in journalism.
