MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 4, 2009) – Holocaust survivor Estelle Laughlin will speak at Milligan College on Monday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in the college’s new Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts.
Laughlin, a native of Warsaw, Poland, was just 10 years old when the Nazis invaded Poland. She and her family spent four years in the infamous Warsaw Ghetto where more than 500,000 Jewish civilians were confined before being shipped to concentration camps. Following the death of her father at the Majdanek concentration camp, Laughlin, along with her mother and sister, endured two years of forced labor at the Skarzysko and Czestochowa camps before they were liberated in 1945.
After the war, Laughlin fled Poland with her mother, sister and cousins, eventually settling in New York where she worked in the garment industry and met her husband. Laughlin and her husband and three children relocated to Maryland in 1961 where she worked as a sixth grade teacher and reading specialist. She began volunteering at the United States Holocaust Museum in 2007.
