MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 15, 2004) — The National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C. will hold a strings workshop for area student orchestras next Wednesday, April 21, at 3 p.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel at Milligan College.
Over one hundred local string students, teachers and parents will participate in the workshop led by Luis Haza, a violinist with the National Symphony Orchestra. The workshop will focus on developing orchestral string techniques and overall musicianship.
Area student orchestra string sections participating in the workshop include Milligan College, Dobyns-Bennett High School, Science Hill High School, Johnson City Youth Orchestra and Symphony of the Mountains Youth Orchestra.
“The workshop will give local student musicians an opportunity to learn from experts who have received international recognition,” said Dr. Kellie Brown, professor of music at Milligan College and coordinator of the event.
Local orchestra directors, including Maestro Lewis Dalvit, Maestro Cyrus Ginwala, Susan Sterling and Lafe Cook, also assisted in organizing the event. This is the first time that these area groups have united efforts for a strings event.
The National Symphony Orchestra will be in the Tri-Cities on April 21 as part of their 2004 American Residency program. They will present an evening concert at Freedom Hall in Johnson City.
Tennessee was selected as the site of their American Residency for 2004. The orchestra will share the experience of classical music concerts and educational outreach programs across the state of Tennessee. The residency program is funded by a grant for the National Department of Education and by several state and local funding sources.
The National Symphony Orchestra regularly participates in events of national and international importance, including performances of state occasions, presidential inaugurations and official holiday celebrations.
