The 22-piece ensemble is under the direction of Rick Simerly, associate professor of music, and is in its third year of existence. Earlier this year the ensemble was the opening act for legendary jazz patriarch, Ellis Marsalis, at the Grove Park Jazz Festival in Asheville, N.C.

The Spring Concert will feature a number of selections, including jazz standards as well as new compositions, including “Airegin,” “Boplicity,” “Hay Burner” and “Take The ‘A’ Train.” Other selections will be a jazz version of Mr. Rogers’ theme song, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” and contemporary composition “Dance of Denial.”

The ensemble consists of Milligan students, high school and college students from the area, as well as adults from throughout the region.

“I feel very fortunate that we have fantastic musicians in our area who want to contribute to the group,” said Simerly.

Featured soloists are: Justin Stanton, trumpet; Kelly Scollin, trumpet; Michael Douty, alto saxophone; Dick Ferenbach, tenor saxophone; Danny Williams, baritone saxophone; Luke Henry, trombone; Robert Jeter, piano; and Jerry Gannaway, drums.
