MILLIGAN, Tenn. (April 2, 2024) – In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Milligan University Arts Council welcomes award-winning poet Jane Hicks for a reading and book signing on Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in the Walker Auditorium in Seeger Chapel. This event is free and open to the public.
“Jane Hicks’ poetry is well respected not only in the Appalachian region but around the world,” said Art Brown, chair of Milligan’s Arts Council. “She has read at Milligan for each poetry collection she has released, and it is always a tremendous honor to have her on campus.”
A native of East Tennessee, Hicks retired after a distinguished career as an educator. Her poetry has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies including “Southern Poetry Anthology: Contemporary Appalachia,” “Coal: An Anthology,” “Iron Mountain Review” and “Red Crow Review.”
Hicks will be signing “The Safety of Small Things,” her third and latest poetry collection. Her other collections, “Blood & Bone Remember” (2005) and her 2014 collection “Driving with the Dead,” received the prestigious James Still Award for Poetry from the Appalachian Writers Association. Hicks is also a celebrated fiber artist, and her literary quilts illustrate the works of playwright Jo Carson and the novelists Sharyn McCrumb and Silas House.
