Milligan professor to attend international seminar on journalism ethics

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 13, 2004) — Simon J. Dahlman, associate professor of communications at Milligan College, is one of 50 participants attending an international seminar on journalism ethics in Salzburg, Austria, next week.

“I’m excited by this opportunity to work intensively with journalists and teachers from around the world,” said Dahlman, who received a fellowship grant from the Mellon Foundation to attend the seminar. “I’m eager to see what I can bring back to our students at Milligan. I get to enjoy the experience, but I think they’ll benefit most in the long run.”

The Salzburg Seminar, Feb. 18-25, will focus on recent events where news media have faced an increasing number of social, political, technological and economic pressures. The seminar will explore the media response to the challenges and opportunities of the internet, the conduct of the media during war, and the relationship between the media and government, in terms of national security. The journalists will explore the implications of these developments both for the practice of their profession as well as the impact on their audiences.

Some of the issues to be explored will include the relationship between the British Broadcasting Corporation and the British government; the emergence of the satellite broadcaster Al Jazeera, the Arabic news channel in the Middle East, and the impact of its editorial policies both at the regional and global level; and the role of national newspapers and magazines within the context of an increasingly globalized news media.

Dahlman serves as 2004 president of the Greater Tri-Cities Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and is a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications and College Media Advisers.

He teaches courses at Milligan on journalism, mass media and writing and writes “Face to Faith,” a weekly column on religion for the Johnson City Press. Before teaching at Milligan, he was editor at large with Focus on the Family Periodicals, founding editor of Pastor’s Family magazine, and editor of The Lookout. His articles have appeared in several American and British publications, including The Guardian (England), The Cincinnati Enquirer, Leadership, Moody and Boundless.org. An ordained minister in the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, Dahlman served congregations in England, Tennessee, and Ohio.

A graduate of Milligan College, Dahlman holds a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and has studied at Emmanuel School of Religion, Springdale College in Birmingham, England, and London School of Journalism.

The Salzburg Seminar is an international educational center that began in 1947. Each year it offers several seminars in a variety of academic and professional fields at its conference center in Austria as well as courses around the globe, with an emphasis on the free exchange of ideas in a cross-cultural environment.
