MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 26, 2019) — Milligan College will host its 32nd annual “Festival of One Act Plays” on Tuesday, April 30, and Wednesday, May 1, at 6 p.m. in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre located in the Gregory Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Richard Major, professor of theatre and the festival’s founder, has served as the festival’s producer since its establishment. Tess Evans-Shell will serve as technical director and junior Patrick Lines of Fullerton, California, will be the lighting director.
“Each year, I admire how focused and creative our students become when faced with the challenge of directing their first play,” said Major. “This year’s directors are full of enthusiasm and energy, and we have another great lineup of student plays that will delight, move and entertain audiences of all ages.”
This year’s festival will feature five plays directed, designed and performed by current and former Milligan students.
For sophomore English major Elizabeth Dykes, the festival provided the opportunity to write and perform.
“Seeing my words come to life has been an incredible experience,” said Dykes. “The director has done amazing work with my script for ‘Slice of Life,’ and I am honored to be featured as an actress and a playwright in this year’s festival.”
Alumnus Bradley Harvey will present his original play “Love is Patient.” The play centers around a young man who proposed to his girlfriend three years ago and has not received an answer.
Dan Banks, a 2012 graduate of Milligan, will present “The Twelve-Pound Look” by JM Barrie, a comedic drama about gender roles.
Taylor Williams, junior fine arts cinema major, will direct the comedy “Slice of Life” about a case of mistaken identity.
Jeanette Marie Hartsough, a 2017 graduate, will present “The Other Room” by Ariadne Blayde, which follows the inner life of a brilliant teenager with autism.
Alumna Melanie Yodkins will present “The Maker of Dreams” by Oliphant Down.
