MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 25, 2019) — The Milligan College Orchestra, directed by professor of music Dr. Kellie Brown, presents “The Music of the Seasons” on Saturday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium located in Seeger Chapel. The concert will celebrate the variety of musical representations of the seasons of the year. The event is free and open to the public.
The orchestra will perform selections from the Baroque to the present, including Vivaldi’s “Winter” from “The Four Seasons,” “Summertime” by George Gershwin, Peter Tchaikovsky’s “February Carnival” and “October” by Eric Whitacre.
The highlight of the evening will be English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Folk Songs of the Four Seasons.” Vaughan Williams was commissioned in 1949 by the Women’s Institute to compose the work for a national music festival. The selection requires a large women’s choir and is rarely performed.
The performance of “Folk Songs of the Four Seasons” will be made possible through a collaboration with several local women’s choirs. The Milligan Women’s Chorale will welcome singers from Carson-Newman University and Walters State Community College for the finale.
“It is always an exciting opportunity for performers and audiences when collaborations allow great works to be heard,” said Brown. “Our program is always looking for ways to reach out into our community and create artistic synergy.”
In addition, Dr. Carrie Klofach, assistant professor of musical theatre, will perform two award-winning songs with the orchestra. “The Last Rose of Summer” by Friedrich Flotow was featured in the 2018 Golden Globe award-winning movie, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri,” and “It Might as Well be Spring” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “State Fair” won the 1945 Academy Award for best original song.
