MILLIGAN COLLEGE (Apr. 7, 2017)—The Milligan College Orchestra will conclude its season with a spring concert presenting works of remembrance and celebration on Saturday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium located in Seeger Chapel. This event is free and open to the public.
“In Remembrance and Celebration” will feature selections including “Remembrance,” by Sarah Gibson, in response to 9/11; “Jubilant Overture,” by Joshua Reznicow; “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba,” by Handel; and “Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah,” by Saint-Saens.
The highlight of the concert will be a performances of Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and “Lacrimosa” from Mozart’s “Requiem” by the Milligan Concert Choir joined by two area high school choirs: David Crockett Madrigal Singers, directed by Milligan alumna Kelly Sams (B.A. ’09, M.Ed. ’10) and University School Singers, directed by Dr. Joseph Borden.
“Music is one of the most significant and meaningful ways of expressing the joys and sorrows of our lives, as well as being a conduit for preserving and transmitting memories,” said Dr. Kellie Brown, director of the Milligan Orchestra, the only collegiate orchestra in the Tri-Cities region. “This concert highlights the complex human experience through a variety of instrumental and choral pieces.”
Brown has been a member of Milligan’s music faculty since 1998 and serves as chair of the music department and director of its strings program. She is a frequent clinician and performer throughout the country, as well as assistant conductor and associate concertmaster of the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra.
