MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 10, 2016) — The Milligan College Concert Choir and Orchestra will present “Music for Lent,” featuring “Stabat Mater” by contemporary British composer Cecilia McDowall, on Saturday, March 19, at 7 p.m. in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium located in Seeger Chapel. The concert is free for all students and children. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the door or at the Milligan Bookstore, 423.461.8733.
“Stabat Mater,” which debuted which debuted in Great Britain in 2004, reflects on Mary’s sorrow as she witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. The concert features special guests and individual performances from The Civic Chorale, East Tennessee Children’s Choir and baritone soloist, Conor Angell.
“We are excited to partner with these two outstanding musical ensembles from our region to present the U.S. premiere of Cecilia McDowall’s “Stabat Mater,” said Dr. Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music. “This will be a unique opportunity for those in our community to experience this deeply moving work.”
The Civic Chorale is a non-profit group of auditioned volunteer singers under professional direction contributing to the musical arts in the Tri-Cities region. The group performs musically challenging choral literature, both sacred and secular, ranging from Gregorian chant and Renaissance motets through regional and world premieres of recently-composed works. The East Tennessee Children’s Choir was founded in 1987 to provide exceptionally talented fourth through eighth-grade children an opportunity to experience a choral repertoire, including music of the masters, while also enriching their lives with music representing the heritage of the Appalachian region in which they live.
Winner of the 2013 Chicago Oratorio competition and the 2013 American Prize in vocal performance, Angell, who is from Ireland, is an active performer in operas, recitals and orchestral concerts throughout the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. He teaches on the music faculty at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana.
