MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (June 2, 2015) — Milligan College students will have a new opportunity to study journalism for a semester in New York City at The McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute (MPJI) at The King’s College starting fall 2015.
The competitive NYC Semester in Journalism program will give students a taste of the fast-paced world of journalism at the Christian-focused MPJI, coupled with the experience of living and working in New York City, the media capital of the world.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for students interested in studying journalism and honing their skills,” said Jim Dahlman, associate professor of communications at Milligan. “While the industry is seeing its share of challenges, there’s a thriving demand and great opportunity for journalists to work in innovative ways.”
A competitive program, students will need to apply and be selected by The King’s College.
Once chosen, students can take classes that specialize in entrepreneurial journalism, emerging media, documentary filmmaking and traditional journalism classes that specialize in business, sports, entertainment, magazine and creative nonfiction.
Each student also will get hands-on experience through a guaranteed internship at a New York City print publication, website or TV station.
Similar to Milligan’s mission to blend Christian values with rigorous academic studies, the focus of MPJI is to promote journalistic integrity with a Christian understanding.
The King’s College features outstanding faculty including Paul Glader, associate professor of journalism and director of MPJI, who spent 10 years as an award-winning staff writer for The Wall Street Journal and continues to write for Forbes.com, Bloomberg BusinessWeek and the NewYorker.com. He holds a Master of Science degree from Columbia University’s graduate school of journalism.
Other faculty include Terry Mattingly, senior fellow for media and religion at The King’s College and a former Milligan faculty member. He writes the nationally-syndicated column “On Religion” and edits the “GetReligion” blog. He was founding director of the Washington Journalism Center at the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities and was a reporter at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colorado.
Milligan communications graduates have worked for NASA, CNN, Saturn, Dreamworks SKG, Focus on the Family, the Cleveland Browns and other TV, radio and newspapers throughout the country. Many own their own digital media companies, publish books, teach or have pursued work in ministry, business or non-profit organizations. Others have pursued graduate studies at Syracuse University, University of Illinois, University of Georgia, NYU, Duke, Johns Hopkins, University of Texas, among others.
From the annual Humanities European Tour, to semester abroad opportunities in Nashville, Oxford and China, Milligan offers numerous off-campus opportunities around the world for students to expand their knowledge of other cultures and become world citizens.
