MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 21, 2015) — Before the spring semester comes to a close, Milligan College’s Performing, Visual and Communicative (PVC) Arts area will showcase a variety of fine arts events and incredible student work.
These events are free and open to the public:
• The 20th Annual Milligan Juried Art Exhibition opening reception, Sunday, April 26, 2-4 p.m., Milligan Art Gallery, located in the lower level of Derthick Hall.
• The Milligan Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert, Monday, April 27, 7:30 p.m., Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Seeger Chapel.
• The 28th Annual Festival of One Act Plays, April 27-29, 6 p.m. each night, McGlothlin-Street Theatre located in the Gregory Center.
• “Buffalo Tales” storytelling event, Thursday, April 30, 6-9 p.m., McGlothlin-Street Theatre.
• The 15th Annual Milligan College Short Film Festival, Friday, May 1, 6 p.m., McGlothlin-Street Theatre.
• “Jack and the Beanstalk,” by Milligan’s Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA), Thursday, May 7, 11 a.m., McGlothlin-Street Theatre.
“What better way to end a semester than to highlight the talents of our PVC students and faculty,” said Dr. Carrie Swanay, professor of communications and PVC area chair. “There will be something for everyone during the week, and I know the community will be eager to support our events which include art, photography, music, theatrical performances, short films and storytelling.”
The Milligan Juried Art Exhibition showcases the top Milligan student art projects from the year. Only the best art, photography, sculpture and digital media projects will be selected for display. Awards of excellence and merit will be given to standout pieces. The juror is Tom Root, who owns Root Studio School of Painting and Drawing in Johnson City.
The Milligan Jazz Ensemble’s spring concert will feature the college’s 21-piece ensemble, under the direction of Rick Simerly, associate professor of music, along with special guest tenor saxophonist, Doug Henry.
The 28th Annual Festival of One Act Plays was started in 1987 by Richard Major, Milligan’s professor of theatre, to energize the theatre program by providing a hands-on theatre experience for students. This long-running annual tradition features plays directed by students in the theatre department.
The following one act plays will be presented at 6 p.m. in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre:
• “Jack and the Beanstalk,” by Milligan’s TYA, and “Invitations,” directed by 2012 alumna Corri Richardson (’12), Monday, April 27.
• “Apply Within,” directed by senior Darcie DeLong, and “The Zoo Story” directed by senior Adam Derrick, Tuesday, April 28.
• “‘The Romancers’ by Edmond Rostand,” directed by junior Andrew Wissmann; “Ferris Wheel,” directed by junior Tori Giblin; and “Interlopers,” directed by senior Christopher Heldman, Wednesday, April 29.
Milligan storytelling students will share their talents and what they have learned about the art during “Buffalo Tales,” an evening of storytelling that will include everything from personal stories to Biblical accounts and children’s stories to folk tales.
The 15th Annual Milligan College Short Film Festival showcases work running 15 minutes or less created entirely by students. Students showing films include freshman Brent Doolittle, from Lexington, Kentucky; junior Colton Fenner, from Mountain City, Tennessee; junior Brooke Gomez, from Polkton, North Carolina; sophomore Jeanette Hartsough, from Monument, Colorado; junior Colin Hawley, from Woodbridge, Virginia; freshman Gabe Logan, from Morganton, North Carolina; sophomore Noah Parker, from Gray, Tennessee; and senior Eric Vines, from Lexington, Kentucky.
