MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 10, 2015) – The Milligan College Orchestra will conclude its season on Friday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Seeger Chapel with a spring concert celebrating the instrumental and choral music of American and English composers.
The concert will include works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Robert Kerr, Leroy Anderson, John Rutter and music from “Downton Abbey,” the hit PBS TV show.
“The 20th century music by American and English composers is some of the most beautiful writing for strings, and we are excited to present a concert based on these works and the similarly wonderful choral pieces,” said Dr. Kellie Brown, orchestra director and chair of the music area.
The orchestra will be joined by special guest Rebecca Paluzzi on flute. Paluzzi is professor of flute and director of the Suzuki Studies Program at East Tennessee State University, the only university-level Suzuki Flute Teacher-Training Program in the world. She is principal flutist in the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and also is a member of the Symphony of the Mountains.
In the second half of the concert, the Milligan Concert Choir, directed by Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music at Milligan, will join the orchestra and perform “Fern Hill,” a hauntingly beautiful composition by John Corigliano with text by poet Dylan Thomas. They also will perform two sacred anthems by John Rutter: “For the Beauty of the Earth” and “O Clap Your Hands.”
This event is free and open to the public. For more information on Milligan arts events, visit www.milligan.edu/arts.
