Critical thinking, professional skills, empathy—the English major is not just for those who love reading or who want to teach English. The English major, at its core, is about critical thinking, strong communication, research and writing skills, and empathy, traits which are always in high demand.
Our majors go on to law school, to publishing houses, medical school, ministry, doctoral training, teaching, and much more. Our majors have secured spots in top graduate schools such as the University of Chicago, Yale, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, and George Mason University. Our Graduates
Graduates of Milligan’s English program go on to teach in public and private schools and colleges (with additional study), to do graduate work in English and related fields, to study law, to work as journalists, editors, and public relations officers, to study library science/information technology, to study theology, and to work in marketing, customer assistance, and other aspects of the business world.
After graduating from Milligan with an undergraduate degree in English, Megan N. Fontenot completed her M.A. in Literature at Michigan State. She currently is enrolled in a Ph.D. program and recently published some great work on Middle Earth.

Milligan’s English major prepares students for graduate work in English and related fields, to study law, to work as journalists, editors, and public relations officers, to study library science/information technology, to study theology, and to work in marketing, customer assistance, and other aspects of the business world. Many English majors also train to become English teachers in secondary or post-secondary careers. The English major is available as a B.A. or minor. An emphasis is available in writing.
As an English major at Milligan, you’ll learn to:
- read literature with appreciation, understanding, and a developing critical sophistication
- write clear and effective literary criticism and analysis
- acquire a knowledge base to pursue additional education or to obtain gainful employment
