MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (August 4, 2008) — Milligan College and Standard Publishing recently honored three teenagers for making a difference in their churches and communities through their Christian witness. Josh Bueno, Steven Eynon and William Pannell each received the Student Leader in Christian Service recognition during a special luncheon hosted by Milligan’s Youth in Ministry (YiM) program at the North American Christian Convention (NACC) held in Cincinnati, Ohio.
“The student servant leadership recognition is not an award but an opportunity to set forth examples of young people who are making a difference,” said Phyllis Fox, director of church relations at Milligan and founding director of the YiM program. “These are young people who lead by serving others.”
Fox explained that Milligan annually recognizes adult leaders who demonstrate servant leadership in their careers and community as part of their Leaders in Christian Service (LCS) program. This year they wanted to recognize students who advance the cause of Christ in everything they do.
“Milligan developed the LCS program in 2001 to recognize adults who demonstrate servant leadership on a daily basis and in a variety of professions,” said Fox. “We realized that students also can have a dramatic impact on their schools and their communities through their Christian witness.”
Bueno, of Baltimore, Md., attends Boulevard Christian Church where he serves as a teacher and as part of the drama team in the Children’s ministry. He is active in his church youth group and participates in church musicals and plays. Having earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, he serves as an instructor for younger students in his community.
Eynon, of Sunrise, Fla., attends Community Christian Church where he is a small group leader for middle school students. He also volunteers with VBS and Service Day and has participated in mission activities to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. As a senior at Westminster Academy, he was selected for the Pinnacle Award in recognition of his leadership, service and character.
Pannell, of Bristol, Va., is a leader in his youth group at Suburban Christian Church where he is a junior deacon, leads teen worship and serves on the outreach committee. In 2006 , he traveled to Honduras as part of the church’s mission team . He also participated in the cultural exchange program to China last year. Additionally, he serves as a volunteer with the Special Olympics and with his community’s food bank.
Each student plans to pursue a career in vocational ministry.
“Milligan College and Standard Publishing share a long history of service to the church,” said Mark Taylor, publisher of Standard Publishing in Cincinnati, Ohio. “Over the past 141 years both have sought to equip men and women to lead through service. We are honored to be a part of this program as it seeks to highlight examples of Christian leadership for others to emulate.”
