Awards ceremony honors Milligan students


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (May 2, 2008) — Milligan College ‘s recent Awards Convocation was a special day for many Milligan students who were honored for their accomplishments this past year. More than 60 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony.

Micah Antanaitis, a senior from Hermitage, Tenn., received the year’s most distinguished award, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award recipient is nominated by the faculty. The award is presented each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic record, and participation in college life.

Antanaitis will graduate May 10 with a degree in humanities. He has been accepted to graduate school at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he will pursue a master’s degree in architecture.

Lydia Babik, a senior nursing major from Walton, Ky., received the Dennis Bratton Leadership Award.

The Dennis Bratton Leadership Award is an award that recognizes a student for service in the community and on campus, excellence in Christian character, evidence of Christian service in a local church, and advocacy for change to improve society. The award was established by Hugh Jones and is named in honor of Dennis Bratton, senior minister at Christ’s Church in Jacksonville, Fla., and a member of the Milligan College Board of Trustees.

Local students receiving awards include:

Hannah Lily Smith, a senior English major from Johnson City, received the English Award.Greta Blosser, also of Johnson City, was presented with the Humanities Award. James William Clark of Limestone was honored with The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Humane Learning.

Matthew Glaspie of Johnson City received the Army Nurse Corps Association Scholarship. Leslie Blowers of Elizabethton received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Nursing. Erin Lock of Jonesville, Va., received the Outstanding Senior Nursing Award.

The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Music, which is presented to the person deemed to have the most consistently exhibited excellence in music courses, ensembles and personal performance, was presented to Erin Aubrey, a sophomore music major from Elizabethton. Kelly Sams of Jonesborough received the Music Educators National Conference Student Chapter Award.

Lucas Gregory of Johnson City received The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Biblical Learning.

Jaime Hearn of Milligan College, Tenn., was recognized as the Student Sociology Major of the Year.

Joseph Brown of Kingsport was presented with the Legal Studies Award. Jana Jessee of Bristol, Tenn., was presented with the Business Administration Award. Laken Stewart of Pennington Gap, Va., received the Accounting Award.

Kalee Nagel of Rogersville, Tenn., received the Society of Professional Journalists Scholarship.

Andrew Green of Bristol, Va., received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Communication.

Brittany Bales of Kingsport received the Human Performance and Exercise Science Physical Education Award, as well as The Outstanding Female Athlete Award.

The Undergraduate Student Teaching Award was presented to Amy Futrell of Johnson City. Benjamin Love, also of Johnson City, and Greg Foster of Kingsport were presented withMaster of Education Intern Awards. The Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Alison Slagle of Bristol, Tenn. Jessica Bowman of Piney Flats was presented with the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Education.

Theatre Recognition Awards were presented Gigi Urgo Leonard of Milligan College, Tenn., and Tina Radtke of Gray, Tenn.

Leonard and Radtke, along with Andy Frost and Kayla Toler, both of Milligan College, Tenn., received The Fine Arts Awardpresented to graduating seniors majoring in fine arts. Along with excellence in the classroom, this award acknowledges students who have best exemplified what it means to be an artist.

The Outstanding Academic Student Award was presented to Kaitlyn Ferry of Johnson City.  

Other award recipients include:

Theatre Recognition Awards were presented to Sharayah Cochran of Oakwood, Va.; Kara Crotts of Forest City, N.C.; Megan Gable of Lebanon, Ind.; Tyler Simmons of Newburgh, Ind.; and Kyle Kuhn of Fishers, Ind.

Kuhn also received The Ross Bader Concert Choir Award, which is presented each year to the person deemed to have made the greatest contribution to the musical and spiritual life of the Concert Choir. The recipient is selected by vote of the Concert Choir members.

Cochran, Crotts and Simmons, along with Bailey Carter of Avon, Ind., were recognized withFine Arts Awards.

Julie Pickens of Hermitage, Tenn., received the Women’s Chorale Award, and Welbie Prinston of Knoxville, Tenn., received the Orchestra Award.

The Performing and Visual Arts Outstanding Student Scholarship is awarded each year to a rising junior or senior fine arts major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who also has found significant ways to connect to the many facets of Milligan’s fine arts program. This year’s recipient was Kaitlyn Aigner of Ferrum, Va.

The Johnson City Press Tom Hodge Journalism Scholarship was presented to Kristen Oxley of Canton, Ohio.

The German Award is presented on the basis of outstanding achievement, exemplary commitment and measurable progress in the acquisition of German language skills. This year’s recipient was Anna Gindlesperger of Bethel Park, Pa. The French Award was presented to Hannah Bond of Nashville, Ind. The Greek Award was presented to Jonathan Hawkins of Vero Beach, Fla. The Spanish Award was presented to Erin Hernandez of Harlingen, Texas. Hernandez also received the Wall Street Journal Award.

The Standard Publishing Award for Outstanding Promise in Christian Education was presented to Joshua Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla. The Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Award was presented to Matthew Shedd of Straughn, Ind.

The Service-Learning Student Award was presented to Lauren Flanders of Bel Air, Md.

The Student Psychology Major of the Year Award was presented to Jeremiah Key of Walkertown, N.C. Emily Smith of Demolte, Ind., received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Social Learning.

The Lone L. Sisk Award and the Outstanding Biology Student Award were presented to Samuel Osei-Bonsu of Ghana . The Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Student Awardwas presented to Curtis Gibson of Lewis Center, Ohio. Canadian Rosanna Couture receivedThe Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Scientific Learning.

The Computer Information Systems Award was presented to Brian Goad of Oak Ridge, N.C. Jeffrey Barnes of Franklin, Tenn., received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Business.

Grayson Patton of Fries, Va. , was recognized as this year’s Outstanding Male Athlete. He also received the Outstanding Mathematics Student Award.

The Paul Clark Teacher Education Award was presented to Kelly Ann Slocum of Clay, N.Y

The Student Leadership Award was presented to Abby Dalton of Indianapolis, Ind. The award is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates servant leadership, virtuous character, active leadership responsibility and potential, and serves as a role model to other students. Dalton also was recognized with the Student Appreciation Award.

The following students were recognized by the Phi Alpha Theta Honor History Society: Micah Antanaitis, Anna Gindlesperger, Brian Goad, Kortney Goulds, Lindsey Jones, Matthew Shedd and Kylie Thiel Shedd.

Alpha Chi National Honor Society, whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and ideal character among undergraduate college students from all academic disciplines, recognized the following seniors: Micah Antanaitis, Miranda Byrd, Rebekah Cunningham, Anna Gindlesperger, Anna Hampton, Erin Hernandez, Julee Kamppi, Erin Lock, Holly Napier, Amos Nidiffer, Samuel Osei-Bonsu, Kelly Slocum, Hannah Lily Smith and Kayla Toler.

Alpha Chi also announced new inductees: Kaitlyn Aigner, Jeff Barnes, Leslie Blowers, Rosanna Couture, Andrew Green, Autumn Hardy, Robert Johnston, Joshua Lovelace, Rebecca McDowell and Kalee Nagel.

The following students were recognized by the Psi Chi Honor Society: Kaitlyn Aigner, Greta Blosser, Will Frye, Anna Hampton, Jaime Hearn, Rachel Lee, Amanda Lizzio, Emily Needles, Cristin Patterson, Emily Smith and Lindsey Wilmer.

Sigma Alpha Pi is a national leadership and success organization designed and dedicated to providing leadership motivation to students. It was created to serve students, by giving them the tools, information, support and motivation to be successful in reaching their personal goals. A select group of students, sophomores or higher with at least a 3.0 GPA, were invited to join the society: Stephie Abraham, Melissa Ash, Sharayah Cochran, Alyssa Graber, Anna Hampton, Jana Jessee, Lindsey Jones, Tasha Kennedy, Eric Lock, Whitney Ramey and Sarah Smith.
