MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 29, 2008) — The Milligan College Orchestra will present its spring concert on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m., in Seeger Memorial Chapel located on the Milligan College campus.
The concert will feature English string works by Benjamin Britten, Charles Avison and Gustav Holst. Other highlights include the performance of several film scores, including music from “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Munich.”
“This is an exciting concert for string players because English composers took such an interest in writing quality music for them,” said Dr. Kellie Dubel Brown who directs the orchestra. “It also is a pleasure for the performers and audience to feature film music, especially that of John Williams.”
Brown, associate professor of music, has been a member of the Milligan College music faculty since 1998. She serves as chair of the music department and director of the strings program and Milligan College Orchestra. She also is a frequent performer throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and is the founder and principal violinist of the Appalachian String Quartet.
The Milligan College Orchestra was founded in 1999 as an expansion of the string program at Milligan. The orchestra provides an excellent ensemble experience for Milligan students and has broadened into the community to include students from East Tennessee State University and area high schools, as well as Milligan alumni and members from the community.
The orchestra performs throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and collaborates frequently with area ensembles, including the Johnson City Civic Chorale, the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and the East Tennessee Children’s Choir.
