Race for Hope 5K fundraiser to benefit the fight against human trafficking

Milligan College, Tenn. (March 9, 2011) — Two Milligan College student organizations have teamed up to host Race for Hope, a 5K fundraiser to raise awareness and money for the fight against human trafficking, on Saturday, March 26, at 9 a.m. This event is open to the public.

The fundraiser is organized by Breaking the Silence, a student group that works to raise awareness and healing for victims of sexual exploitation, and Milligan’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Race proceeds will benefit Eternal Threads, an international organization committed to rescuing girls and women from a life of human trafficking.

The 5K race will begin at Milligan’s Derthick Hall and will consist of a rolling course circling through the Milligan campus, Buffalo Creek Road and Toll Branch Road. The registration form and payment information can be found at www.milligan.edu/raceforhope. Registration is $15, if postmarked by Saturday, March 19; and $20 on race day. Registration closes at 8:30 a.m. on March 26.

Participants will receive a red thread bracelet as part of the “Red Thread Movement” to remember the victims of human trafficking. Proceeds will assist Eternal Threads as it continues to create awareness of sex trafficking and provide employment and safe housing for rescued girls in Nepal. The proceeds will also further the establishment of border units along the Nepal/India border. These units rescue as many as 100 girls from slavery each month.

Eternal Threads also consults with local partners to determine how to best use profits from the sale of local goods to help provide for local needs. The organization currently aids endangered women by providing literacy and vocational training, supplying equipment, sponsoring anti-trafficking border units, providing safe houses and educating girls in an effort to give them more power over their own lives.
