MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Dec. 7, 2011) — Dr. Patricia P. Magness, professor of humanities at Milligan College, will be the keynote speaker at Milligan’s commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel.

Milligan will award 113 degrees at the ceremony. The December graduates include eight bachelor of arts (B.A.), 35 bachelor of science (B.S.), 28 master of business administration (M.B.A.), 14 master of education (M.Ed.), and 28 master of occupational therapy (M.S.O.T) students. The class also includes the first graduate to complete Milligan’s Computer Information Systems-Mobile major, Milligan’s first major to be offered completely online.
Magness holds a B.A. from Milligan, an M.A. from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary liberal studies from Emory University. She has taught at Milligan since 1984, serving as director of humanities from 1992 through 2005. She currently serves as area chair of humane learning and holds the George and Janet Arnold Chair of Humanities. After almost three decades of service to the college, Magness plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2011-2012 academic year.
Her teaching emphases include women’s studies, African-American literature and humanities. She is married to Dr. J. Lee Magness, professor of Bible, and serves as an elder at Hopwood Memorial Christian Church.
During commencement, Milligan also will present two individuals with its highest honor, the Fide et Amore citation, in recognition of their loving and faithful service to the college.
