Loveday will autograph copies of the book during Milligan’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts.
The collection of more than 200 images takes readers on a journey through Milligan’s history—from its humble beginnings on banks of Buffalo Creek in the 1800s to its modern-day milestones, including the appointment of the college’s 15th president Dr. William B. Greer, who wrote the book’s foreword.
Loveday, who serves as director of graduate admissions for Milligan’s Master of Education program, began writing the book about a year ago, when Milligan’s 14th president Dr. Donald Jeanes announced his retirement.
“I thought it was a good time for Milligan history to be celebrated and revisited,” Loveday said. “Because Milligan has such a rich heritage in Christian education, I hope that the book will contribute to its legacy of promoting servant leadership by celebrating those examples.
“Besides providing an enjoyable trip down memory lane for folks today, the book also will inform present and future generations about Milligan’s earlier history and will help generate interest in preserving those stories in greater detail.”
Loveday is a native East Tennessean with deep Appalachian roots. A descendent of several Smoky Mountain family lines who have been in the area since the 1700s, she enjoys a rich heritage of storytelling that links her to the region. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Tennessee and a master’s degree in teaching from Carson-Newman College. With additional graduate studies in art and art history, she has taught several subjects and all ages, from non-traditional age college students to students in kindergarten.
As an avid history buff, she is involved locally with the Watauga Association of Genealogists and the Watauga Historical Association. She also serves as regent for the John Carter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
