Weekend features ‘The Secret Garden’ performances
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Oct. 24, 2011) — Alumni and friends of Milligan College will return to campus for the college’s Homecoming festivities, Oct. 28-29. The weekend includes a variety of activities, ranging from a musical theater performance to a parade and fall festival.
The annual celebration will begin in a special way this year with the inauguration of Milligan’s 15th president, Dr. Bill Greer. The inauguration ceremony is Friday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m.
On Friday evening, several alumni and friends will be honored at the annual “Celebrate Milligan!” dinner. Greg (’76) and Becky Lewis Johnson (’75) will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards. The Hardin “Spirit of Milligan” award will be given to Clint (’95) and Adele Adinolfi Holloway (’96).
Paul Bajko (’53), Jeff Bourn (’86) and Tricia Huffman (MBA ’05) will be honored with the Professional Excellence Award. Cassie Lomison Mackell (’06) and Marta Zimon (’06) will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. Also being recognized for the Heritage Award this year are Marvin (’57) and Charliece Sublett Swiney (’60). The awards dinner will be held in the McCormick Dining Center at 6:30 p.m.
Another highlight Friday evening is Milligan’s production of “The Secret Garden,” to be performed Oct. 28 and 29, at 7 p.m., and again on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 2:30 p.m. in Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. Performances are open to the public. Admission is $10 for adults; $8 for ages 62 and older; and $5 for students. Tickets are available in the Milligan College Bookstore or at the box office prior to each performance.
Saturday will begin with Buffalo Run, the annual Associated Ladies for Milligan (ALM) Scholarship 5K Run/2.5K Walk, at 9 a.m. This event is sponsored by Saratoga Technologies and WorkSpace Interiors. Participants will convene at Derthick Hall. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female in each age group. The registration fee is $15 and the proceeds benefit student scholarships at Milligan.
Saturday’s events also include the annual alumni vs. students flag football game at 9:30 a.m. at Milligan’s Anglin Field. The winners will march with their trophy in the 12th annual Homecoming Parade at 2 p.m. The parade route will follow Blowers Boulevard, the main road through campus. A “Fall Festival,” complete with inflatable attractions, will be held after the parade from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Derthick Lawn.
Other Saturday afternoon events include a 12:30 p.m. reception for the opening of an art exhibit by Carrie Theobald Buell, a 1 p.m. reception to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Milligan’s P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library, and an open reception at 5:30 p.m. to honor President and First Lady Bill and Edwina Greer.
The festivities will conclude Saturday with a coffee house concert featuring the Christian folk duo Alathea performing at Milligan’s McMahan Student Center. Doors open at 8 p.m., and music begins at 9 p.m.
All meal events, theater performances and the walk/run are ticketed events. All others are free and open to the public.
