Free performances set for Dec. 3 & 15
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Nov. 21, 2011)—Milligan College’s Theatre for Young Audiences will perform an original, company-written play—“Health Heroes to the Rescue!”—on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Johnson City Public Library. A second performance will take place on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. in Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. Both performances are free and open to the public.
The fast-paced, energy-filled production finds innovative ways of teaching children in kindergarten through third grade the lifelong benefits of healthy living.
“This educational production, which is written and performed by Milligan theater students, teaches children an important message, but it does so by providing many light-hearted moments and characters they will remember and enjoy,” said Richard Major, professor of theater and the founder of Milligan’s Theatre for Young Audiences.
The play introduces students to heroic characters such as Dentist Dave, Workout Wanda, Planter Polly, and Cady Clean, as well as their counterparts, Cavity Calvin, Couch Potato Cathy, Junk Food Judy and Germmy Jimmy. The Milligan players also provide study guides for teachers and parents to use for follow-up activities with their students or children.
Each year, Milligan’s Theatre for Young Audiences travels to elementary schools throughout the region to perform an original play with an educational message. In addition to the Dec. 3 public performance at the library, the Dec. 15 performance at Milligan is an opportunity for homeschool families to enjoy the same production that more than 2,000 East Tennessee school children have already seen at their respective schools.
This year’s Theatre for Young Audience company is comprised of 12 students: Daniel Banks of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Lacie Black of Jonesborough, Tenn.; Cara Beth Brackins of Johnson City, Tenn.; Jonathan Cooper of Blountville, Tenn.; Krista Jackson of Clarksburg, Ind.; Austin Macenczak of Atlanta, Ga.; Emma Rees of Redford, Mich.; Jared Saltsman of Fremont, Ind.; Keara Seibert of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Morgan Simmons of Ashburn, Va.; Brennan Tracy of Oblong, Ill.; and Cerissa Warner of Gray, Tenn.
