Growing up in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Mikayla knew she wanted a college experience built around more than a degree. “As soon as I stepped on campus, I could tell that Milligan would not be that way,” she recalls. “Even on my campus tour, the professors and students tried to learn things about me and remember my name.”

Dr. Booher’s welcoming demeanor and genuine care for his students made a significant impact on Mikayla. By the end of her first semester, he suggested she take his Fundamentals of Ministry class the following spring. This advice opened a new door that Mikayla hadn’t considered before.
Mikayla arrived at Milligan as a Psychology major, but she didn’t yet know how this suggestion would quickly expand her career path and calling. Through conversations with Dr. Booher and Joshua Little, who led Milligan’s Ministry Leadership Program (MLP) during this time, she decided to become a double major in psychology and student ministry.
Throughout her time at Milligan, she has been able to take more of Dr. Booher’s classes and deepen her passion for ministry.

Launched in 2018, Milligan’s MLP program is designed to prepare a new generation of experienced church leaders by combining the university’s academic excellence with immersive, hands-on ministry experience and intentional mentorship.
Through the MLP, Mikayla has experienced hands-on learning opportunities that are often rare at other colleges and universities. Retreats encouraged spiritual growth and deeper friendships. Regular semester expedition trips offered a behind-the-scenes look at church operations across the country. Each opportunity has helped shape her calling and leadership.
She also completed a semester-long internship at Mountain Christian Church in Joppa, Maryland, gaining ministry experience while living and serving there full-time. This summer, she will travel to Brisbane, Australia, with Christian Missionary Fellowship International (CMF), another opportunity made possible through the program’s network and support.
How have faith and community-based clubs, like Vespers, shaped Mikayla’s experience?
Academic and professional growth are only part of the picture. Mikayla’s faith has grown exponentially during her time at Milligan, and she points to one experience above all others: Vespers, a student-led campus ministry that meets on Sunday nights. Completely organized and run by students, it has become one of the most meaningful parts of her week.
“Vespers is one of the most authentic worship experiences I have been a part of,” she said.
Being surrounded by like-minded students her own age has been deeply meaningful in Mikayla’s life.
“We have a lot of fun together, but we also challenge each other to grow in our walks with God.”
How does Mikayla stay involved at Milligan?
Outside of MLP and Vespers, Mikayla has always been heavily involved in student life. She has served as a Resident Advisor in Hart Hall for two years (and will serve in MSA next year), works in the admissions office as a junior admissions recruiter and Called Summit coordinator, serves on the Vespers leadership team, and is a member of both Psi Chi and Alpha Chi honor societies.
Her advice to incoming students? Get involved and say yes to everything you can early on.
During her freshman year, she tried things she never expected, like performing in a play, serving in the Student Government Association, and even trying rock climbing.
“One of my favorite things about Milligan is its community, and getting involved in that early on will help you with your transition into college tremendously.”

As she heads into her senior year, Mikayla reflects on her time at Milligan with deep gratitude. She came not knowing a single person on campus and will leave with lifelong friendships, professional ministry experience on two continents, a double major, and a clear sense of calling.
“The faculty, staff, and students have all made such an impact on my life,” she says, “and I can confidently say I will look back on these memories at Milligan for a lifetime.”
