Milligan faculty lecture explores robotics and critical thinking

MILLIGAN UNIVERSITY, Tenn. (February 3, 2022) — Milligan University’s Faculty Lecture Series will present a lecture titled “Robotics and Critical Thinking,” on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. in Hyder Auditorium.

The lecture highlights the work and experiences of the Milligan robotics team and is presented by Dr. Teresa Carter, professor of information systems, and Dr. Ian Lundholm, assistant professor of mathematics. Both serve as advisors to the team.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to participate in competition on an international level and to give back to our local middle and high school students in the fields of engineering, computer science, and mathematics,” stated Carter.

Milligan students compete in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) ROV competition, where they participate as a team in a challenge that engages a global community of learners. The competition challenges students to apply business, communication, mathematics, engineering and computer science concepts to address large-scale environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.

This spring, the team is building an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) capable of performing tasks related to marine renewable energy, offshore aquaculture, blue carbon and exploring the Antarctic.

Lundholm holds a bachelor’s in mathematics from Waynesburg University and a doctorate in math from Washington State University.

Carter holds a bachelor’s in business administration from Milligan, a master’s in computer information systems from the University of Phoenix, and a doctorate in information systems from NOVA Southeastern University. Carter is also a member of the Association of Computing Machinery.

The Faculty Lecture Series provides students and other members of the Milligan community a glimpse into the active world of academic research and writing at Milligan. The lecture is free and open to the public.
