Senior Graphic Design Showcase ‘Must Contain’

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Nov. 5, 2019) – Milligan College senior graphic design majors will present a design showcase Nov. 17 – Dec. 6 in the Milligan Art Gallery located inside Derthick Hall. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 2-4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The exhibit, titled “Must Contain,” will feature work by seniors Amy Shumaker, of Bristol, Tennessee; Bethany Sodergren, of Johnson City, Tennessee; and Cora Wymer, of Johnson City.

“We chose the title ‘Must Contain’ because we all have different styles,” shared Sodergren. “We wanted to represent our different approaches to graphic design, but we also wanted to tie the show together. We each identified one word that represents what our work must contain.”

These seniors acknowledged how Milligan has shaped the meaning and the style of their art. For Shumaker, her collection must contain detail, humor defines Sodergren’s designs and Wymer’s work must contain purpose.

The three seniors have become familiar with each other’s styles over the years and have enjoyed watching each other develop as designers. As a small class, each student has received lots of support from Milligan’s faculty and their peers.

“Our graphic design professor Art Brown has really pushed me to go outside of my comfort zone,” said Shumaker. “He has supported me as I pursue designs within my area of focus, but he also challenges me to find new ways to branch out in my art.”

While each senior’s designs are defined by one word, their portfolio will reflect this word in a variety of ways.
