Milligan to host ‘Coffee with a Cop’ on Oct. 2

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 25, 2019) — Milligan College will serve as a host for the “National Coffee with a Cop” event on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Officers from the Elizabethton Police Department will be on campus from 8:45-11 a.m. in Derthick Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

“We are proud to partner with the Elizabethton Police Department to host this national event in our region,” shared Dr. Teresa Carter, organizer of the event and professor of information systems. “Our students and community members can hear first-hand what police work entails, along with the many ways law enforcement improves the health and welfare of our community.”

Now in its fourth year, this national event aims to strengthen the relationship between police officers and the community members they serve. By coming together for coffee, police officers and citizens can casually discuss community issues, build trust and discover mutual goals. More than 10,000 locations host this event each year across the country. Milligan is the only location in Northeast Tennessee to offer this opportunity.

Milligan offers various majors that align with law enforcement initiatives, including new concentrations in cybersecurity and addictions counseling.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our professors and students to connect our courses and programs to issues affecting our communities,” shared Carter. “Events like ‘Coffee with a Cop’ help us better prepare our students to meet the needs of their communities as servant-leaders.”
