Donors help athletic facilities shine

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (June 20, 2019) — Building upon another year of athletic milestones, Milligan is committed to providing student athletes and fans with top-tier athletic facilities. This summer, several major athletic renovations will be completed, thanks in part to the financial support of the college’s alumni and friends.

The installation of lighting around the softball field is one major undertaking, made possible through a generous donation from Milligan alumni and trustee Denny (’76) and Cindy (‘79) Mayes. The Mayes’ gift allows Milligan to equip the softball field with top-of-the-line Musco lighting, and the month-long installation process will begin on July 8. Last season, the team advanced to the championship game in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament. With new lighting, the team can enjoy more flexibility for scheduling practice and hosting games.

“We’re grateful to Denny and Cindy Mayes for their longtime support of Milligan and, in particular, Milligan athletics,” shared President Dr. Bill Greer. “Their generous gift to fund the softball field lighting project will have a tremendous impact on the team’s performance both on the field and in the classroom.”

Milligan’s swimming pool in the lower level of the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse will look starkly different in the fall. The bottom of the pool will receive a new surface, and new decking will surround the entirety of the pool. New lights, drains, and filtration system also will be installed.

Through the support of many, the Mathes Tennis Center is scheduled to have each court completely resurfaced in July. Resurfacing is the first step in several anticipated updates for the college’s tennis facilities.

“Our current renovations demonstrate Milligan’s commitment to maintaining our tradition of excellence in athletics and the student experience,” shared Greer. “We welcome the financial support of friends and alumni who share this vision. We foresee several additional renovations, and their support makes future projects possible, while keeping down the cost of a Milligan education.”
