Students honored at awards ceremony


JD McDonald earns Milligan's Ivor Jones Award

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 26, 2018) —Milligan College’s Awards Convocation on Thursday, April 26, was a special day for many of the college’s undergraduate students who were honored for their accomplishments this past year. Over 70 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony.

J.D. McDonald, of Johnson City, Tennessee, received Milligan’s most distinguished student honor, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award recipient is nominated by the faculty. The award is presented each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic excellence and participation in college life.

McDonald also was awarded the SGA Student Distinguished Service Award. He will graduate in May with a major in social work.

Local students who received awards included:

In biblical learning, Reese Brackins, of Unicoi, Tennessee, was awarded the Fred and Esther Meding Honorary Award for Biblical Studies.

In business, Joshua Lamb, of Chuckey, Tennessee, was presented the Business Administration Award; Nicholas Sewell, of Kingsport, Tennessee, earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship in Business; Jonathan Russell, of Kingsport, was awarded the Richard Phillips Outstanding Legal Studies Student Scholarship, as well as the RISE Above Conference Presentation Award.

In computer science, Tilly Erwin, of Unicoi, Tennessee, earned the Computer Science Award.

In education, the Paul Clark Teacher Education Award was presented to Sarah Carrion, of Milligan College, Tennessee.

Undergraduate Student Teaching Awards were presented to Carinne Parker, of Johnson City; Haley Greenwell, of Gray, Tennessee; and Conly Shults, of Erwin, who also was the co-recipient of the Exercise Science Award in Physical Education, along with Tucker McPherson, of Johnson City.

The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Engineering went to Elijah “Bo” Pless, of Elizabethton, Tennessee.

The Exercise Science Pre-Professional Award was presented to Trisha Brown, of Greeneville, Tennessee.

The Outstanding Student Scholarship in Exercise Science was awarded to MaKayla Lady, of Bluff City.

The German Award was presented to Sydney Rhoton, of Jonesborough.

Mikaela Way, of Gray, earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Humane Learning.

The Senior Nursing Award was awarded to Marissa Langford, of Johnson City.

In communications, the American Advertising Federation Northeast Tennessee Scholarship was presented to Amy Shumaker, of Bristol, Tennessee; Caleb Perhne, of Elizabethton, earned the Senior Communications Award.

The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Performing and Visual Arts was awarded to Sierra Frosley, of Erwin; Michala Morris, of Piney Flats, Tennessee, was co-recipient of the Senior Fine Arts Award.

Candace Tingle, of Kingsport, was co-recipient of the Outstanding Graphic Design Student Award, along with Caroline Walker, of Mount Juliet, Tennessee.

Maverick Summie, of Jonesborough, was awarded the Concert Choir Award and the National Association for Music Education Award.

In scientific learning, Caleb Sprouse, of Blountville, was presented the Outstanding Senior Award in Biology; Noah Parker, of Johnson City, earned Outstanding Senior Award in Mathematics; and Katie-Starr Harrell, of Bluff City, was awarded the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Scientific Learning.

In social learning, Cleo Farr, of Milligan College, Tennessee, earned the Outstanding Student in Psychology Award. Mikaela Way, of Gray, was awarded the Sociology Award.

The Jeremy S. Duncan Memorial Scholarship was presented to Michael Bolding, of Roan Mountain.

Elissa Borchert, of Talbott, Tennessee, was presented the Board of Trustees/Board of Advisors Award for Outstanding Academic Student.

The Board of Trustees/Board of Advisors Award for Outstanding Female Athlete went to Marissa Langford, of Johnson City.

The RISE Above Conference Presentation Award was presented to Sue Harrod, of Johnson City, and Levi Holloway, of Jonesborough.
