MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 8, 2016) — Milligan College recently announced the hiring of an award-winning designer to teach in the college’s new graphic design major. Art Brown, who currently serves as Milligan’s creative services coordinator and adjunct instructor of communications, will transition to full-time faculty this summer as assistant professor of communications teaching graphic design.
Brown has 20 years of experience in corporate and academic settings. He has created work for Fortune 500 companies and numerous regional companies and organizations. Brown holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art/graphic design from East Tennessee State University. He recently displayed work in a national juried show at the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. As an artist, his work has been included in both local, national and international exhibitions.
The graphic design major is a comprehensive curriculum that combines creativity and artistic abilities with industry-leading software to teach students visual communication and problem solving that has applications in many sectors of the job market.
“I love solving problems through design,” said Megan Gaylor, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee, who was a graphic design minor but jumped on board the major when it became available in fall 2015. “It allows me to pursue my passion for design as a future career.”
Gaylor’s favorite work in the graphic design classes she has taken to date are the self-promotion assignments, like creating three-dimensional leave-behind materials for potential employers.
“Those can help us get internships,” added Gaylor. Assignments that involve logo design are the most challenging, she said, since that design is often the first impression for the viewer and puts more at stake for the designer.
“Graphic design is a convergence of visual art, technology, communication and business,” said Brown. “Directing the graphic design major at Milligan will enable me to impact students by developing their creative potential and preparing them to succeed in the design job market—so they can adapt in an innovative and relevant way to styles and trends in our world.”
Gaylor says Brown has helped her grow significantly as a designer.
“He’s always asking students questions to help make their designs better,” said Gaylor. “It’s helped my design and problem solving. I’m so glad he will now be a full-time faculty member dedicated to this major.”
The new major bolsters the college’s Area of Performing, Visual and Communicative Arts, which offers majors in communications, fine arts, music, music business and music education.
“Communication is vital in the job market today, and that is at the core of our area,” said Dr. Carrie Swanay, area chair for Performing, Visual, and Communicative Arts. “Milligan’s graphic design students not only learn the skills needed to work at the professional level, they are taught the ethical responsibilities of graphic design from a distinctly Christian worldview.”
