MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (June 20, 2015) — Milligan College mourns the passing of Dr. G. Richard Phillips, professor emeritus of religion.
A beloved, long-time member of the college’s faculty, Phillips served as professor of Bible at Milligan from 1967-1992. In addition to teaching, he served as the pre-law advisor, legal assistant program director and chair of the area of humane learning.
“Dick was a beloved member of our faculty for many years and represents the best of Milligan,” said Milligan President Dr. Bill Greer. “His contributions to our community left an indelible mark.”
The Phillips family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, June 22, at Grandview Christian Church in Johnson City, Tennessee. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m.
Phillips earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Theology from Lincoln Christian College, his Master of Arts from Butler University and his Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary. He went on to receive his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University and his J.D. from the University of Tennessee Law School.
From 1956-1990, Phillips also served as a chaplain in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve. He was awarded the Air Force Legion of Merit Medal, Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and Illinois Medal of Merit. Phillips retired as a brigadier general from the Illinois Air National Guard.
Phillips is survived by his wife, Rebecca Phillips; two children; and four grandchildren.
His son Dr. Richard W. Phillips graduated Milligan in 1974 and currently serves on the college’s Board of Trustees.
