Milligan students present at Alpha Chi national convention

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 15, 2015) — Milligan College’s chapter of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, Tennessee Nu, recently took a delegation of students to the national convention in Chicago where they presented their research to their peers from Alpha Chi chapters in colleges and universities across the United States.

In addition, junior music major Laura Mixon, of Kingsport, Tennessee, received the Alfred H. Nolle Scholarship worth $1,500 for a vocal performance and an academic paper on the theoretical basis of that performance.

“We are thrilled that several of our students received national recognition,” said Dr. Lori Mills, professor of psychology and chapter sponsor. ”This represents an important step in these students’ academic and professional careers as they share their work and attend the presentations of peers in their disciplines.”

In order to be eligible for membership into the honor society, a student’s GPA must be in the top 10 percent of the junior or senior class. Alpha Chi admits students from all academic disciplines and actively promotes academic excellence, undergraduate and graduate research, campus academic dialogue and civic engagement.

“Admittance into the college’s Alpha Chi chapter is a major accomplishment for students,” said Mills. “On top of grades, each student must be affirmed by the faculty as having good character, a core value at Milligan which encourages students to be servant leaders.”
The following students presented research at the convention:

• Nathan Cachiaras, a junior Bible major from Fallston, Maryland, presented “Just War Ethics in Christian Community: The Ecclesial Impact of Nigel Biggar’s ‘In Defence of War.’”
• Sterling Herron, a senior biology and chemistry major from Butler, Tennessee, presented “Nuclear and Chloroplast Sequences Resolve the Concord Grape Mystery.”
• Shannon Jewett, a senior accounting and business administration major from Cary, North Carolina, presented “The Impact of Culture on Financial Reporting and Accounting Practices.”
• Hannah Reedy, a senior nursing major from Plano, Texas, presented “Of Doctors and Darkrooms: The Impact Early Photography Had on the Medical Field.”
• Brittany Shaffer, a senior business administration major from Knoxville, Tennessee, presented “Charging to Teach a Man How to Fish.”
• John Steadman, a junior humanities major from Johnson City presented “Morrison’s Roots: A Case for an African American Gothic Genre.”

In addition to those students, Katie Siebenaler, a senior from Elizabethton, Tennessee, attended the convention and was Tennessee Nu’s official voting student delegate. Tony Jones, Milligan’s dean of students, attended and was the chapter’s sponsor delegate. Dr. Robert Mahan, professor of accounting, serves as Region III secretary-treasurer. Both Mahan and Mills serve on Alpha Chi’s National Council, of which Mills is the secretary.
