MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 2, 2015) — The internationally acclaimed vocal jazz quartet the New York Voices will be coaching Milligan College’s a cappella groups, Heritage and Heard Mentality, in a two-hour masterclass on Wednesday, April 8, from 7-9 p.m. in the college’s McGlothlin-Street Theatre located inside the Gregory Center.
During the masterclass, Milligan’s ensembles will perform for and receive feedback from the members of the New York Voices. The event is free and open to the public.
Performing their 27th year, the New York Voices are known for their close-knit vocal performance and blend, as well as their inspired arrangements. They are able to move seamlessly from setting to setting, be it orchestral and big band, or to the intimate trio lineup. With deep interests rooted in jazz, rhythm and blues, Brazilian, classical and pop, their music mixes traditional sensibilities with the unexpected.
“Milligan’s a cappella groups explore a wide variety of styles, and this will be a great opportunity for them to learn vocal jazz first-hand from such an accomplished group,” said Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music and director of Heritage.
The New York Voices also will perform at East Tennessee State University on Thursday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Martha Street Culp Auditorium of the D.P. Culp Center. Tickets are $22 or $10 for students and can be purchased by visiting www.etsu.edu/music or calling 423-439-4276.
Both Heritage and Heard Mentality will present a spring a cappella concert on Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre, which also is free and open to the public. Both groups are active throughout the year and represent Milligan at churches and civic events locally and nationally.
