MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 17, 2014) – Milligan College will welcome alumni and friends back onto campus for the college’s Homecoming weekend, Oct. 24-25. Participants can look forward to events including theatre performances, alumni-athlete competitions and the annual parade.

“This year’s theme, “Since ’66: Homecoming 2014… a road trip worth taking,” combines the nostalgia of Route 66 with our founding date of 1866,” said Theresa Garbe, director of alumni relations. “Each year, alumni and their families travel long distances—some coming from overseas—to join us on campus for the festivities. We anticipate hosting between 750-800 guests, and we are excited about the lineup of events.”

The weekend will commence with a tea for the class of 1964 at the President’s home on Friday from 3-4:30 p.m. A shuttle will be available for transportation from the Gregory Center to the President’s home at Tara Court.

On Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., the annual “Celebrate Milligan” dinner will be held in the McCormick Dining Center of Sutton Hall, where several Milligan alumni and friends will be recognized for their achievements and contributions.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award will go to Troy Hammond (’89). Both Jack Sale (’67) and Annie Tipton (’04) will receive Professional Excellence Awards. The George W. Hardin Spirit of Milligan Award will be given to the Aldridge and Greenwell Families. Members of the Jim, Jerry and Keith Frasure Families will be presented with the Heritage Award. The Athletics Hall of Fame will also grow with the induction of Megan Aldridge Harmon (’07) and Ryan Starr (’03).

Other Friday night events include a men’s basketball game at 8:30 p.m. in the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse between Milligan alumni and the current team, as well as the annual Powder Puff game in which freshmen and sophomore women take on the junior and senior women in flag football on the Anglin Practice Field at 8 p.m.

Saturday morning will begin with the Buffalo Run 5k or 2.5k walk sponsored by the Associated Ladies for Milligan. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse, and all proceeds from the race will benefit student scholarships.

For families with potential Buffs, “Legacy Buff” visit day will give children of alumni an opportunity to meet with the admissions staff, take a tour of campus and ask questions about all things Milligan beginning at 10 a.m. in the Little Hartland Welcome Center.

“A New Day,” a photo exhibit by alumna Amber Neill Parker (‘04), will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Milligan Art Gallery located in Derthick Hall. Parker’s photographs tell the stories of orphans with their foster families in and near Beijing, China, and their journey of hope.

At 12 p.m., there will be a golf tournament fundraiser at the Elizabethton Golf Course for baseball alumni and friends. Proceeds will benefit the Milligan baseball team.

The annual Homecoming parade will make its way down Blowers Boulevard at 2 p.m. and lead into the festival on Derthick lawn from 2:30-4:30 p.m., which includes kettle corn and inflatables for kids of all ages.

The P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library will host a special event Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Clint Holloway (’95) will present his newly published biography on the college’s namesake called “He Still Speaks: A Literary Biography of Robert Milligan.” Light refreshments and a Robert Milligan art exhibit will accompany the signing.

The performance of “The Wonderful World of Disney” at 3:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Seeger Chapel will be a special treat for families and Disney lovers alike. This short concert features the Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale, Heritage, Heard Mentality, Jazz Combo and the Orchestra who will be playing classic favorites from Disney movies such as “Frozen” and “The Little Mermaid.”

Another attraction is Milligan’s theatre production of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” which will be performed on Oct. 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 26 at 2:30 p.m. in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre located in the Gregory Center for Liberal Arts. Tickets are $7.50 and can be purchased in advance at the Milligan College Bookstore, or by calling 423.461.8733.

All meal events, theatre performances, the golf tournament and the walk/run are ticketed events. All others are free and open to the public.
