MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2014) – The Milligan College Arts Council presents a unique concert highlighting the contributions of women in the history of music on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Walker Auditorium located in Seeger Chapel.
Under the title “Women in Music: Someone Will Remember Us,” award-winning musician Lauren Pelon traces the story of women in music by performing selections from around the world.
“This performance will transport the audience across different cultures and time periods,” said Dr. Charlotte Anderson, assistant professor of music. “I can’t wait for our community to experience this special concert.”
Pelon sings and plays approximately 25 ancient and modern instruments—some of which were traditionally played by women, and some forbidden to women.
“I am fascinated by the interesting ways people of other cultures and different times have found to make music,” said Pelon. “I especially enjoy doing these programs because they differ from ordinary concert performances. They offer not only an opportunity to listen to music, but also a way to think about how music has affected the lives of people all over the world.”
Pelon’s concerts have taken her around the world to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, England, Kazakhstan and China. In addition, she has performed with Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” Her musical adaptations have been performed by the Philadelphia String Quartet, with symphony orchestras and on NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
