MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2014) – Milligan College will present the third annual professional development workshop for music educators and church musicians on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. in Seeger Chapel.
The event will feature guest clinician Vincent Oakes, executive/artistic director of the Chattanooga Boys Choir and president of the Tennessee chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. Oakes will present sessions titled “Fostering Expressivity and Music Literacy in Choral Rehearsals” and “Working with the Adolescent Changing Voice.”
“The workshop is an opportunity for local music educators and church musicians to recharge by learning new ideas and fellowshipping with one another,” said Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music. “We are proud to feature Vic Oakes as our main clinician. He is an energetic musician who has experience teaching in schools, churches and community choirs.”
Oakes has conducted in the United States, as well as Cuba and Portugal. He contributed to the third edition of the textbook “Choral Pedagogy” and to the “Choral Journal.” Oakes holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Florida and a Master of Sacred Music in choral conducting from Emory University.
Dr. Kellie Brown, chair of the music area, and Anne Elliott, assistant professor of music, also will deliver sessions on “Strings 101.1: Working and Communicating with String Players” and “Best Practices for Working with Choral Accompanists.”
Professional development credit in music education is available upon completion of the workshop.
