BRISTOL, Tenn. (Sept. 14, 2014) – Frederica Mathewes-Green, author and correspondent, speaks at King University in the Memorial Chapel on Monday, Sept. 15, at 9:15 a.m. She also speaks at Milligan College at 7 p.m. in Hyder Auditorium and again Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Milligan’s Seeger Chapel. The lectures are co-sponsored by Milligan College and Bristol Herald Courier.

Mathewes-Green is a wide-ranging author, whose work has appeared in such diverse publications as the Washington Post, Christianity Today, Smithsonian, the Los Angeles Times, First Things, Books & Culture, Sojourners, Touchstone and the Wall Street Journal. She has been a regular commentator for National Public Radio, on Morning Edition and All Things Considered, a commentator on the Hallmark TV network, a columnist for the Religion News Service, Beliefnet.com, and Christianity Today, wrote regular book reviews for the Los Angeles Times, movie reviews for National Review Online and Christianity Today Movies, recorded a podcast for Ancient Faith Radio and was a consultant for Veggie Tales.
“Frederica possesses a great gift in her writing and her speaking, the ability to bring deep truths and thought-provoking challenges with personal warmth, terrific story-telling, and a fine sense of humor,” said Jim Dahlman, associate professor of communications at Milligan College. “Whether she’s quoting ancient church fathers, introducing us to people she’s met around town, or talking from her own experience, she always comes as an honest friend and a fellow pilgrim traveling on the road toward God. I’m thrilled that she’s returning to this area.”
She has published nine books, including “The Jesus Prayer: The Ancient Desert Prayer that Tunes the Heart to God” (Paraclete, 2009), “Facing East: A Pilgrim’s Journey into the Mysteries of Orthodoxy” (HarperCollins, 1997), and “The Illumined Heart: The Ancient Christian Path of Transformation” (Paraclete, 2001). Mathewes-Green’s essays were selected for Best Christian Writing in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006, and Best Spiritual Writing in 1998 and 2007. She has published over 700 essays.
Mathewes-Green grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of South Carolina in 1974, and her Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Virginia Episcopal Seminary in 1977. She was a certified natural childbirth educator from 1979-1988.
She lives with her husband, the Rev. Gregory Mathewes-Green, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he is pastor and she is “Khouria” (“Mother”) of the parish they founded, Holy Cross Orthodox Church. She has also been recording books for the blind with the Radio Reading Network of Maryland since 1997.
